My CCRM IVF Journey

Our successful journey through IVF #2 at one of the world's top fertility clinics

Step One!

Posted by auntiem10 on July 23, 2010

With my IVF protocol, step one is taking one birth control pill daily. The purpose of BCPs during an IVF protocol is twofold: you’re partly suppressing the reproductive system and partly fitting into your clinic’s schedule. For my particular protocol (“standard lupron”), the number of birth control pills needed can vary from 12-21, and the final five pills will overlap with Lupron.

My script was for Ortho Novum, but my local CVS pharmacy gave me Necon 1/35. Maybe it’s generic? Either way, I’ll begin taking it on Cycle Day 3, which is Saturday! I know I’m lame for taking pictures of BCPs, but I want to document as much as I can for future CCRMers! : )

Not to be a downer, but this last cycle they insisted that I use the brand name, and not the generic. I had always used generic in the past, and even had plenty leftover to use this time, but the nurse insisted. But maybe you’re fine with generic. You might want to double-check though. Oh, and I didn’t end up having to fill mine after all because I started right with the Lupron, so that saved me the bigger co-pay for the brand name. Good luck!

Thank you for letting me know!!! I just e-mailed my nurse to double-check. I don’t have to start taking it until tomorrow, so maybe I can switch it out today if needed. Thanks again!

I don’t think there is anything wrong with being excited about a cycle and posting pics about BCP. I say, document everything because if this is the cycle that works, you’ll want the memories!

E-mail your nurse. The same thing happened to me. Dr. Sch never prescribes generics. They will want you on the Ortho Novum. Since I picked up my pill pack on my actual CD3 I had to take one of the Necon’s but they had me pick up the Ortho Novum the next day. Pharmacy will refund the cost of the Necon but you must return that pill pack with your receipt.
